Are you aware that only 64% of small businesses are currently using email marketing to reach out to their customers? Honestly, I think that number should be 100%.

Here's why: your emails are an untapped goldmine. They have the potential to foster deep, personal and long-lasting relationships with your customers, even when your budget is tight.

But, let's face it- writing an email newsletter can be a daunting task. The blinking cursor on your screen seems to be mocking you, and before you know it, you find yourself mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. Sound familiar? Don't worry, you're not alone.

Equip yourself with the ultimate guide to crafting an email newsletter that leaves a lasting impression on your readers. Follow the same tried and tested formula I implement with my copywriting clients. Unleash the power of your words and effortlessly create an email newsletter that captivates your audience. This is a simple yet effective way to master the art of email newsletter writing.

Step 1: Define a goal for your email

Have you ever thought about the purpose of your email newsletters? Are you clear on what you want to achieve with them?

Before you start typing away, take a moment to think about the end goal. What action do you want your readers to take after reading your newsletter? Once you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, you can start crafting your message.

Here are some exciting ideas to help you get started:

  • Share your latest blog post with your subscribers
  • Introduce them to your new product launch
  • Flaunt your new seasonal collection
  • Invite potential clients to book a discovery call with you
  • Give your subscribers exclusive access to a new offer
  • Encourage them to follow you on Instagram for more exciting content
  • Share a discount code to incentivise purchases
  • Promote a limited-time flash sale to create a sense of urgency

Remember, the sky's the limit when it comes to crafting engaging newsletters that your subscribers will love. So, let your creativity flow and start writing!

Step 2: Form the outline for your newsletter

Instead of just delivering news, provide value to your readers with a well-crafted 'value-letter'. Start by considering what information your readers need to take action and make that the outline of your newsletter. And remember, it's not about you. It's about your readers. To ensure your newsletter is top-notch, write it in Google Docs or Microsoft Word, edit it thoroughly, and only then upload it to your email platform. Happy emailing!

Step 3: Sit back and take a break

Believe in the power of taking a break. By stepping away from your computer and taking a moment to do something you enjoy, you allow your mind to relax and recharge. This can help you return to your email newsletter with a clearer head and a renewed sense of creativity. Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your work.

Step 4: Get started writing your first draft

Are you ready for the exciting part? Or maybe you're feeling a bit nervous? It's time to unleash your inner writer and let your creativity run free! Don't worry about perfection, though. This is just your first draft. You can always refine it later on.

Find a cosy and quiet spot where you can write uninterrupted for around 30 minutes. Remember your outline, which will guide you on what to say. Now, it's time to decide how to say it. Make your writing fun, easy to read, and engaging.

Before you start, think about who your reader is. What do they want or need to hear? Tailor your email to meet their needs and make them feel like you are speaking directly to them. Keep it simple and concise, with only one topic or message.

Finally, add some spice to your writing by telling a story. You can choose a customer story, your own story, or a story about someone your reader knows. This will help bring your message to life and make it more relatable. So, let your creativity flow and have fun with it!

Step 5: You guessed it, take another break

Professional copywriters know that taking a break after writing a newsletter is crucial before editing it. They return to their email with fresh and confident eyes, ready to make it even better. By letting yourself sleep on it and returning the next day, you'll feel more confident in making the necessary edits.

Step 6: It's editing time

Are you ready to create emails that pack a punch? Then listen up! The secret to success lies in editing, editing, and editing some more. You want your email to flow like a river, carrying your reader along with it. Does it match your brand's voice and personality? Is it crystal clear and easy to read? Will your reader be hooked from the first sentence?

Put yourself in your reader's shoes and ask, "So what?" If it's not interesting, cut it out! Be bold and ruthless. And make sure you're dropping your reader straight into the action. Forget long intros and small talk - get straight to the juicy stuff! Trust me, your readers will thank you for it.

Step 7: Write a captivating subject line for your newsletter

Crafting an attention-grabbing subject line is crucial to ensure your email gets noticed in your reader's cluttered inbox.

But, how do you make your subject line irresistible enough to make your reader want to open your email? Well, my favourite technique is to add a hint of mystery to your subject line. It's like a gentle nudge to your curious reader to open your email and discover what's inside.

While a straightforward "how-to" subject line might work, it's only effective if it caters to your reader's interests. Otherwise, it's just a wasted effort.

But remember, you need to keep your promises. There's no point in teasing your readers with a trailer for something that doesn't exist. Always be authentic, and your readers will appreciate you for that.
